Kayaking and Canoeing in Sault Ste. Marie
Bring you own kayak or canoe…we have secured indoor storage for your personal craft, or simply rent from one of our Adventure partners. The Lake Superior Coast is a paddlers’ mecca, giving you access to rugged rock headlands as well as sheltered sand and cobble beaches. There are many launch points, most often from beaches. Closer to the Inn, you can paddle the St. Mary’s River that links Lake Superior to Lake Huron. You can even paddle through the Canadian Canal Lock, which is open only to pleasure craft. Or try a leisurely float trip down the Goulais River. Day-trip canoe routes within the Lake Superior Provincial Park include lake-to-lake systems. Paddling route maps are available through the Park’s headquarters, the campground gate offices or through the Friends of Lake Superior Provincial Park interpretive centre. Guided 1/2 Day Voyageur Canoe Trips
Paddle the St. Mary’s River in a voyageur-style canoe. You’ll begin at the Sault Canal National Historic Site where you’ll experience the Sault Locks from the water. Paddle to Whitefish Point and learn about the importance of this site and the adjacent rapids to indigenous culture. Continue your journey along the river towards the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre where you’ll taste local smoked whitefish. The entire journey is expertly interpreted by a local certified guide. Every excursion begins with a safety and basic paddling lesson, so anyone can participate.
